You have to forget who you are and become the character you are playing. Be careful though, because some actors get stuck in a role forever. That nearly happened to me when I played the role of a lion passing by in the background. I really immersed myself in the role and after a while I couldn’t remeber who I was. I couldn’t remember my name. I couldn’t remember my mane. I couldn’t remember anything. The actors and all the crew finished shooting and packed up and went home, but I was still there about two weeks later - I was just walking around in a sort of daze. Eventually, someone got fed up with seeing me and shoo-ed me off with a broom. Luckily, I caught sight of myself in a shop window and recognised myself, and then I was all right. Phew!
Lesson #2 :
Acting can be hazardous! When I get a new role I always fill out this form and keep it in my pocket (I recommend you do the same - just get it printed):
